Last Christmas, my husband decided it was time to gift me with the benefits of modern technology and bought me a cordless vacuum cleaner. He said it was going to relieve me from the pain of having to bow down to plug and unplug my old vacuum every time I changed the room. I unboxed the thing and immediately realised I wasn’t going to use it, although it seemed much lighter and maneuverable than the big canister we had for decades. Some of you may wonder why I disliked it so much. Here it is.

We own a big family house, with grandchildren and nephews around all the time, so crumbles, hair and all sorts of debris constantly menacing to pile up on every corner. This means I need a big bag on the vacuum so I can fit in everything the machine picks up, and the bag on this cordless model was simply too small. This way, while I didn’t have to stop for unplugging the machine, emptying the bag would still make me take a few trips to the trash can and back.

Of course, my husband was determined to make me use it and I didn’t want to get into a fight or hurt his feelings so I gave it a go a couple of times, but that only increased my disatisfaction. Like I said, we have a big house, and by the time I was through with half of the first floor, the battery was gone, and I was obliged to drop everything and wait a lot of hours for it to recharge. Not only that made me feel like I was wasting time, but it became something very tiresome for an old lady like me.

Finally, and this could be just my cleanliness obsession, but I had the impression that this vacuum was made for light cleaning. I had to make multiple passes to be sure I had picked up most of the dirt, but I never felt completely satisfied with the work it was doing. My husband explained that it had something to do with the batteries, which couldn’t power the motor enough, so I began wondering why on earth would anybody consider having such a weak machine. Well, I complained about it so much, nobody in the house dared to contradict me and I was free to return to my old, canister friend.

Mopping

There are various mopping tips that can help you keep your restaurant floors clean day by the day. The first tip is to never use the same mop for kitchen and dining areas. This is a wrong practice because in the kitchen you’ll be dealing with large amounts of stickiness and grease that will later transfer to your mop and, then, to the dining area.

The right thing to do is use separate mops. Also change the water regularly to keep floors clean and fresh at all costs. Use separate cleaning products for different floor types too. Thus, on dining areas, you can use regular cleaning substances, while the ones used for the kitchen floors should be antibacterial and with improved cleaning and sanitizing powers.

In terms of the cleaning substances, there are plenty things to be said. As a general rule, avoid over-the-counter cleaning products as they are not meant for large surfaces such as restaurant floors. In addition, you should avoid all soap-based detergents as they will harm your tiles and floors in the long term. How to prepare delicious falafel

 

Falafel comes traditionally from Arab cuisine, but it was turned into a type of fast food, much healthier than burgers and other fritters, by the Israeli who found a way to make falafel portable, by stuffing small falafel balls into a pita. The chickpea falafel was also made famous by Israeli cooks, as other, more traditional types, were made with other legumes, such as Fava beans.

Now that we are done with this little piece of history on falafel let’s get down to business and make together some delicious falafel. I love this recipe because it satisfies my cravings for fried foods, while still being healthy at the same time. Without further ado, here is how I make falafel.

Ingredients:

–    2 tablespoons of vegetable oil (grape seed oil was traditionally used, but sunflower oil will do just fine)

–    1 chopped onion

–    1 crushed garlic clove

–    One can of chickpea

–    1 tablespoon of curmin

–    Mixed herbs: parsley, coriander, and others you may like

–    1 egg (beaten)

 

The ‘how-to’ part:

Pour one tablespoon of oil into a pan, and use it to fry the chopped onion and crushed garlic. This way the aromas from these ingredients will infuse the oil, and they will become softer, too. Wash the canned chickpeas and drain them and then mix them with all the spices, making sure to mash them slowly until they become like a puree. Add the beaten egg, and then make the mixture even more consistent.

Now add the herbs and season with salt and other spices you may like, such as pepper. It all depends on taste; if you like your falafel to be spicier, it is alright to make it so. After you have this mix ready, take parts of it and forms small balls.

One way of making falafel is by flattening the balls formed from the mix into small patties. Now use the remaining oil to fry these patties. The frying process should not take too long. Use medium heat and cook the patties for just 3 minutes on each side. You will know they are ready when you notice them becoming that delicious golden brown they are known for.

Side dishes

Have your falafel patties with a pita, to serve it fast food style. If you have, spread some hummus on the pita first, then fill it with the falafel patties, sliced tomatoes, salad, and pickles. You will enjoy the taste, and you will have a meat-free type of fast food to enjoy.

Traditionally, falafel is served on a plate with hummus and tahini sauce, a combination that is called a falafel plate to begin with. However, if you don’t have the side dishes readily available, it’s not a big issue, since falafel is one of those foods you can enjoy with a large variety of foods on the side.

 

Summer’s coming! Have you bought a ceiling fan?

 

 

I recently stumbled upon an article on Bloomberg View according to which the habits of using too much air conditioning in American homes isn’t all that bad for the environment. I went to Europe before going to college and since it was summer in Italy when I got there, it was scalding outside. I stayed at a shabby hotel in Naples because I had stories from my grandparents who had come to the United States when they were newlyweds.

To my surprise, Europeans have little to nothing in common with Americans when it comes to their air conditioning habits. In Naples it was so hot I couldn’t stand it anymore and I had to walk down the stairs and then climb back to the room over and over again because I couldn’t have a normal conversation with the receptionist about turning on the AC.

My main issue was that I had become accustomed to using air conditioning like it was built in my body. In winter, I used to sit dressed up in a t-shirt whereas in summer I used to wear a sweater because it was just too cold inside the house. Obviously, it doesn’t make any sense at all. Why not turn down the AC during the summer and just wear a t-shirt and just wear something more during the cold season? On the one hand, you can save a lot of money that you would otherwise have to spend on power bills. On the other, it’s the nicest and most responsible thing you can do for yourself and the environment.

 

Something that I’ve concluded is that getting a fan is a better idea than installing AC in your house. Of course, I’m a bit more open-minded than other people in that I don’t have any problems with the weather when it’s just a bit too warm or too cold. However, getting a high-quality fan can at least allow you to benefit from some relief during the summer. Some models are so advanced that they can even heat up the room when it’s cold.

There’s another reason I feel better about fans than I do about air conditioning. AC machines are so much more expensive compared to fans although they might be more efficient; I can’t deny that. Nonetheless, they are less cost-effective as they eat up a lot of juice. I’ve decided to avoid getting a new AC once the old one that I had installed broke down.

I started researching the topic online and devoted some of my time to reading as many ceiling fan reviews as possible. I came across loads and loads of models at various online retailers, some of which were actually budget-friendly. I had to look at various features such as the size of the blades, whether or not the model came with a remote, and other factors of this kind. In the end, I settled for the Hunter 53091. I liked the design and the fact that it came with a candelabra.
